QUANTICO, Va. - The weather called for rain all day Friday but the sun popped out just in time for the high school football game. Friday’s game featured the 2-0 Fredericksburg Christian Eagles facing the 0-1 Quantico Middle/High School warriors in their home opener.

“Despite their team’s loss in the first game of the season, the coaches still believed that their team is determined to fight to the end no matter the score.

“I feel bad about what happened last game,” said Robert Hume, the offensive line coordinator for the Warriors. “But whatever happens in this game, they will still keep their heads up, knowing that they gave it their all.”

“They took it to us last year,” said Lee Carter, the defensive coordinator for the Eagles. “We’re just taking this one step at a time.”

The Warriors started the game as the Eagles struggled to catch the opening kickoff, keeping them back behind their 30 yard line. On second down, the Eagles connected with a long pass for a touchdown, but a yellow referees’ flag eliminated the score. Frustrated after the penalty, they went with a run on the next play and scored the first touchdown of the day.

During their first possession, the Warrior’s offense looked eager to put some points on the board. The Eagle’s defense, however, had a different agenda on their minds. The Eagles started to put constant pressure on the Warrior’s quarterback forcing him to hurry a pass, which led to an interception and a touchdown by the Eagles.

“As a team we are going to get better tonight,” said Mike Feldman, the offensive coordinator for the Warriors. “It’s a Warriors game and we just need to become what we are…Warriors.”

Warriors tried their best to fend off the Eagles, from rushing the quarterback to slowing down the running game. Yet the Eagles, using not only their skill but size advantage over the Warriors, quickly scored back to back touchdowns. By the end of the first quarter, the score was Eagles 26, Warriors 0.

In the second quarter, Warriors had the ball and, once again, when pressured by the defense, throws an interception which was run back for a touchdown. A pass interference penalty brought back the Eagle’s touchdown.

A couple of plays later, however, the Eagles running game made its way into the end zone for a touchdown, which was yet again called back for holding. That was the third time a touchdown had been away because of a penalty. They made it up, though with a pass into the end zone later in that possession.

The Warrior’s defense continued to try to fight. They stopped the Eagles on the goal line and forced them to kick a field goal. However as soon as the ball was snapped, the Warriors special teams blew through the line to block the field goal.

At the end of the half, the score was Eagles 46, Warriors 0.
During half time the Warriors coaches riled up the team to prepare them for the next half.

“There are no ‘S’ men over there,” Feldman said. “They’re just a football team. We have to step up together, or we will fall apart. Don’t quit! Don’t quit! Don’t quit!”

Coming back from halftime, the Warriors were reborn. The Eagles’ well-oiled offense was put to the test and failed at every attempt to score in the third quarter. Not only did the Warriors keep the Eagles from scoring, they also forced a fumble after a powerful tackle.

Eagles tried to collect themselves after a shutout in the third quarter. Yet the Warriors said enough is enough and kept them from scoring for the rest of the game.

Final score of night was Eagles 46, Warriors 0.

After the game the Eagles had their traditional team prayer. Even though the Warriors lost the game, they put their pride aside kept their heads up, displayed true sportsmanship and joined the Eagles in prayer.

“I’m proud of my team,” said John Hubert, the head coach for the Warriors. “They’re tough and even thought they were out gunned and manned they kept they never gave up. We’ll come back stronger next game.”
