WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio - Airmen from the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, flew a C-17 Globemaster III to March Air Reserve Base, Calif., Nov. 1 to pick up personnel and equipment to aid in relief efforts of Hurricane Sandy.

Twenty-six workers from Southern California Edison utility company and five vehicles were transported from Riverside, Calif., to Stewart Air National Guard Base, Newburgh, N.Y. The passengers and cargo will help restore power to the affected region.

The 445th joined crews from 12 active-duty Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve bases from around the nation to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

An airman from the wing's public affairs office, who accompanied the crew, says he was honored to be a part of a unit who provided support for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

"Just the other day, while watching TV coverage of the storm's affects on the East Coast, I wanted to drive there to help. When I received a call to accompany the crew to document the event, I was honored and glad to help in any way needed."

Before dawn this morning, another C-17 from the 445th Airlift Wing departed Wright-Patterson for Phoenix, Ariz., to pick up cargo for transport to Stewart ANG Base, N.Y.

On Tuesday, Oct. 30, the Force Generation Center and Air Force Reserve Command at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., asked the 445th Airlift Wing if crews were available to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Thursday morning, 445th crews were tasked and flew to March ARB Thursday evening.

"The men and women of the 445th stand ready to assist when and where needed. We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to serve those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Our airmen were ready within a moment's notice to transport much needed personnel and equipment. I'm glad we're able to make a difference," said Col. Michael Major, 445th Airlift Wing vice commander.

Two additional crews have been tasked to transport cargo from Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., today and Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., tomorrow. The final destination is Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J.

In addition, two more crews will be on standby to assist where and when needed.
