CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii - The 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment Savages scalped the Headquarters Battalion Warriors, 36-6, during a rainy game Tuesday. The two teams wasted no time getting down and dirty in this grudge match for the Savages.

The Savages lost to the Warriors 18-15, Oct. 2, and came back with a roaring reply this Tuesday. Scoring an early lead within the first three minutes of the game, the Savages pinned down the Warriors attempts to score as 1st Bn., 12th Marines ran another touchdown in the second quarter.

Ball-handling was difficult for both teams as the field and ball were slicked by intermittent rain showers. Fumbles on both sides saw the ball turned over a few turns in the first half as the Warriors offense paraded the field.

The Savages’ defense tiring, the Warriors took their fast breaks at every opportunity and pushed down the field to score, 12-6.

But the Savages came right back with a blow of their own and sprinted the ball back to their goal, leaving the score 19-6 by the half.

Rodney Harris, the Savages head coach, warned his team that, despite their lead, they should not rest on their laurels.

“We can move on them, we’ve already seen that,” Harris said. “We know what they’re doing, we have an answer for every one of their plays. We can take them completely out of this game.”

Harris also told the team to take their pride down a notch and exit the field if they were too tired to defend as the Warriors kept possession of the ball for most of the first half. Harris said 19 points would not win the game. Steeled for the second half, the Savages blocked Warrior advancement, ran their offense hard, and wrested control for the remainder of the game.

The Warriors seemed to run out of steam by the second half. Headquarters ran into several ball-handling issues including fumbles, incomplete passes, and ball hikes gone awry. Maybe it was the weather or the Savages cheering section as the Warriors ran up and down the field but could not seem to score.

Kelvin Brown, Warriors coach, acknowledged the defeat with his team at the end of the game. “Let me tell you, (1st Bn., 12th Marines) have the right to brag tonight,” Brown said. “They practice. You need to practice.” On the other end of the field, the Savages coaches touted their team’s superior offensive and defensive lines that led them to victory.

Lance Cpl. Jeremy Fowler, quarterback for the Savages, praised his team for their performance. “It started off a little shaky,”
Fowler said, “but we pulled together in the second half and ran the ball really well.”

The next game is scheduled for the Headquarters Battalion versus Marine Aircraft Group 24 at Bordelon Field, Nov. 7.
