CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C - The monthly family fun run at Tarawa Terrace kicked off October and in the spirit of Halloween, participants wore their scariest costumes.
“If you see a monster, run” was the theme for this month, and Lorraine Fuller, recreational specialist at Marine Corps Community Services, said the themes are used to create something special every month for the families.
“It’s more than just a fitness run. It’s a silly event for the kids, and they’re going out and doing healthy things,” said Fuller.
A lot of adults embrace the theme as well because it allows them a chance to be silly, added Fuller.
Safety was paramount for everyone at the run, which is why they were encouraged to think about the costume and ensure it was suitable for running, continued Fuller.
Growing in size each month, the family fun run promotes a healthy lifestyle through fun recreational fitness. The fun run has a program starting each year for beginner and advanced runners. The program consists of a progressive ladder of distances starting at one mile in January, and reaching three miles in December. The advanced runners are challenged with three-mile runs every month.
Not all attendees run; many spouses or individuals with young children walk the distance.
To get everyone involved in the run, MCCS advertises and a wide array of individuals show up, including Marines, spouses and relatives.
“We walk all the time, but it’s better when we have something to walk for,” said Mary Rainey, a military spouse.
It was her family’s first time at the monthly run, but she said she definitely plans to return next month and even get a costume for her daughter for next month’s Turkey Leg Run.
As a way to encourage families to continue to run each month the family fun run offers t-shirts to anyone who participates in four runs. The runs do not have to be consecutive and in 2013 there is a plan to have a new and more exciting prize, said Fuller.
Marines are known for exceptionally high physical training standards, and on the weekends MCCS always has a way to include a little exercise with a lot of family fun and excitement.
