MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Lt. Col. Brian G. McAvoy relinquished command of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 to Lt. Col. Douglas C. Sanders as part of a change of command ceremony, Oct. 19.

McAvoy, arrived to Marine Corps Air Station New River in 2010 where he served as the executive officer for VMM 264. In April of 2011, while deployed to Afghanistan, McAvoy assumed command of VMM-264.

“VMM-264 for has done a phenomenal job for the last two years that I have had the pleasure and the opportunity to watch them,” said Col. Christopher C. Seymour, commanding officer of Marine Aircraft Group 26. “One of the things that comes to mind, when I come down and talk to VMM-264, is blue collar brilliance. They do things with absolute professionalism. That is a direct effect of the influence that Brian has had.”

McAvoy spoke during the change of command, addressing friends and family, those who have worked alongside him and the squadron as a whole. He thanked them for the support that he has received over the years, and his gratitude for the hard work of the Marines in the squadron.

“This unit has done many great things,” said McAvoy, addressing the Black Knights directly. “One thing I take great pride in is that we are not afraid to make mistakes. But what we do is learn from our mistakes and press on. We do what we believe is right, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”

Sanders is not new to the air station. He served as the assistant logistics officer for Marine Tiltrotor Test and Evaluation Squadron 22 as well as serving as the aircraft maintenance officer for the newly re-designated VMM-266 in 2007.

Before handing the microphone over to the new commanding officer, McAvoy gave one last message to the Black Knights.
“Thank you again, Marines, because I know its because of you guys that the squadron runs so well,” said McAvoy. “It’s your hard work and dedication day in and day out that has led us to success.”
Having accepted the squadron colors for VMM-264, Sanders took the reins and addressed VMM-264 for the first time as commanding officer.

“I’m honored to have an opportunity to serve with you,” said Sanders. “Your skill, discipline, and efficiency, will overcome any challenge and seize all opportunities. Whatever the circumstance, we will win.”
