35th Combat Aviation Brigade

KUWAIT – The 3-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion of the 35th Combat Aviation Brigade worked with the Kuwait military to conduct refueling operations in efforts to build and develop a strong partnership with Kuwaiti military forces.

The battalion established a temporary refueling point away from their home station to illustrate the importance of expanding the ability to provide fuel when and where needed to sustain the brigade in time of aviation missions.

During the week-long event, the two paired to learn from one another; however, this is not the first time the unit has worked with Kuwaiti aviators. They have conducted multiple training missions earlier this year and were recently able to spend a day with their Kuwaiti counterparts on a yacht in the Persian Gulf.

“Having recreational time with the Kuwaitis is beneficial to build the bond to continue future relationships, we get to know them both professionally and personally,” said Lt. Col. Stephen Murphy, 3-159th ARB commander. “We learn as much from them as they learn from us.”

The refueling point is employed in support of aviation operations when the distance covered or endurance requirements exceed normal capabilities of the aircraft. The unit showed their Kuwaiti counterparts how the refueling point can help their military accomplish missions in future operations.

An in-depth lecture on the operations of the refueling point was given by 2nd Lt. Kyle Pearce. He explained the importance of safety, selecting the location for operation, equipping the point, and the manning requirements required to conduct successful operations.

“There are daily requirements needed to ensure the equipment and fuel is operating correctly. This isn’t just about having the refueling trucks, but also managing logistic aspects and personnel aspects,” said Pearce.

Working alongside the 3-159th ARB was the 935th Aviation Support Battalion. The 935th ASB portion of the training event was to re-supply the refueling point with food, fuel, and water, as well as waste removal in efforts to leave little effect on the environment.

“While simultaneously conducting 24-hour refueling operation at another location in Kuwait, my team has successfully re-supplied the efforts at this refueling point as well,” said Staff Sgt. Chad Clifford, petroleum operations platoon sergeant.

Overall, the week-long training event has been a huge success for the battalion, demonstrating their ability to conduct split operations and accomplish the demanding missions required of them in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Kuwait.

The units that fall under the 35th CAB, are made up of some of the best America has to offer. It is reflected in their professionalism and dedication to the partnerships we are accomplishing in this region. The brigade will continue to march forward with more partnerships to maintain peace and teamwork with our friends of Kuwait.
