Combined Joint Interagency Task Force (CJIATF) 435

CAMP PHOENIX, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Ural Glanville received his first star in a ceremony Oct. 23 at the Headquarters of the Combined Joint Interagency Task Force (CJIATF) 435, as Brig. Gen. Glanville’s family watched via the Internet from the United States. U.S. Marine Corps General John Allen, commander, International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan, pinned the star on Brig. Gen. Glanville. “This is an honor to be able to promote this great soldier, this great leader. I’m deeply honored to be able to officiate at this moment,” said Gen. Allen.

Brig. Gen. Glanville is currently assigned to CJIATF 435 as commander of the NATO Rule of Law Field Support Mission/Rule of Law Field Force-Afghanistan at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan.

Brig. Gen. Glanville noted that the sacrifice and support of his family had played a major role in his accomplishments and described the influence of his uncle and grandfather in his eventual decision to join the Army. “This is truly a tremendous occasion. Words cannot begin to express how important the love and support of my family means in this moment,” said Brig. Gen. Glanville. “It is truly my honor to serve here in Afghanistan as the commander of NROLSM and ROLFF-A with the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, NATO allies, civilians and our Afghan partners. The rule of law is so important to all of us-it represents the ability of the Government of Afghanistan on a daily basis throughout Afghanistan to demonstrate transparency, legitimacy, due process and is one of the most visible symbols of sovereignty.”

Other dignitaries present included the U.S. Ambassador Director CDROLLE Stephen McFarland; U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Keith Huber, commander, CJIATF 435; U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Phillip Churn, commander, Task Force Titan; and U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Dixie Morrow, Deputy CDROLLE, U.S. Embassy Kabul.

Brig. Gen. Glanville was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1984 after graduating from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. He has held numerous command and staff positions in the Army, including Staff Judge Advocate for the 335th Signal Command where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to his assignment to Afghanistan, Brig. Gen. Glanville was assigned as a military judge in the 150th LOD with duty in the Second Judicial Region, which covers the southeastern United States.

As a civilian, Brig. Gen. Glanville is a judge of the Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta, a post he has held since 2004. In 1996, he began his judicial service as a Magistrate Judge in Fulton County State Court. He has also served as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney and civil litigator.

CJIATF 435 conducts legal and humane U.S. detention and intelligence operations; partners with Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA) and U.S. interagency and international counterparts; expands Afghan detention capacity; and secures combined intelligence to defeat the insurgency within U.S. detention and Afghan correction systems. On order, the task force will transfer elements of detainee operations to Afghan detention/correction authorities.
