    Story by Sgt. Kimberly Browne

    1st Cavalry Division

FORT HOOD, Texas - Troopers from the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion “Mavericks,” 1st Cavalry Division, held a memorial ceremony in honor of Sgt. Lamar “Teddy” Johnson at the 76th Street Chapel here, Oct. 17.

Johnson was born June 12, 1990 and died in a car wreck in Dekalb County, Ala., Sept. 28.

After the ceremony, his friends and leaders described Johnson’s character as a soldier and a person.

“Sergeant Johnson was an excellent soldier,” said Capt. Gary Romero, commander for the Division Signal Company, HHBn, 1st Cav. “He was confident, loud and aggressive, but he was fair. He embodies the characteristics of a great [noncommissioned officer] and we’re sad he is no longer with us.”

The impact he had on fellow soldiers pressed through in their statements about him.

“He was a very confident person and I always admired him because he was respectful and hard working,” said Spc. Andrew Eck, a soldier with DSC. “He was my best friend and he was always there for me.”

His supervisor, Sgt. Lartica Bufford, also spoke very highly of Johnson and said, “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of him or miss him.” She explained how he was funny and full of life.

Johnson joined the Army May 5, 2009. Recently he returned from a deployment to Bagram, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom XII, with the division headquarters and maintaining a network in Regional Command East.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, three stepchildren and mother.
