SOUTH CHINA SEA – Hull Maintenance Technician Fireman Kirk Spriggs, a Baltimore native, is currently serving aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).

Spriggs works in the hull technician shop where he brazes, fabricates, welds and repairs broken parts aboard the ship.

“Our rate is important because we deal with morale and safety issues aboard the ship,” said Spriggs. “The best part of my job is the gratitude we get from other shipmates when we fix something they really need.”

The Navy is founded on the principles of courage, equality and fairness that have been instrumental in presenting many ideas to the world through the selfless service of upstanding men and women.

“I joined the navy to see the world, travel and expand my horizon,” he added. “Since I joined, I have seen people and been places you only see on TV.”

Spriggs, son of Kirk and Patricia Spriggs, graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 2007 and plans to further his education after the Navy.

The foundation of the Fleet is its sailors who lead by the example of being ever ready and dedicated to the Navy’s mission. The Navy takes pride in its sailors’ ability to be hard working and always prepared.

“I’m very proud to serve my country and fellow shipmates during this deployment,” said Spriggs. “I’m always willing to help anyone who needs my help. I know that without each other shipboard life would be tough.”

The Bonhomme Richard ARG, commanded by Capt. Cathal S. O'Connor, is comprised of amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6),amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and amphibious transport dock ship USS Denver (LPD 9) and is currently operating in the 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
