YUMA, Ariz. - Semper Fit and Health Promotions began Ball Boot Camp, an eight-week fitness and nutrition class, early this September in an effort to help women prepare for ball season at the GCX, building 686.

and Marines who want to look good in their gowns or dress blues, are encouraged to attend the course.

They will learn a variation of workouts to enhance muscle confusion and promote weight loss and tone. At the end of the workout, healthy snacking tips will be provided to help participants get the most out of the program.

“Our goal is to not only get the ladies ready for the ball but also help them take the steps to a lifestyle change,” said Michelle Dominique, a station Semper Fit personal trainer and Ball Boot Camp instructor. “This course will help form more of a habit which becomes routine by providing this class for eight weeks.”

Looking good for the ball is important of course but so is making healthy life choices. Many can agree, this change is no easy feat.

Fortunately, since Ball Boot Camp is a group workout, spouses have the opportunity to meet other wives who have the same goals. Working with a partner or friend makes a healthy life a lot easier to achieve.

“By starting this program, we hope to show women there are opportunities out there and they can do it,” said Nikki Dallum, station health promotions coordinator. “In addition to working out, eating correctly is also a large component of the healthy lifestyle. One simple thing to remember is make fruits and vegetables the main dish and everything else the side.”

The Semper Fit and Health Promotions staff are full of useful information readily available for Marines and civilians on station. For those who may say, “But I am too busy,” fortunately they know of some home workouts for the busy lady.

“Anything can be turned into a workout,” said Dominique. “Go up and down the stairs for a few minutes or use the couch for dips. You can also do basic body weight exercises like sit ups or pushups.”

Ball Boot Camp is not the only class provided by Semper Fit. There are multiple classes featuring multiple workout styles provided throughout the day, including Saturdays. For those who live in 16th Street housing, the 16th Street Gym is open from 8 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. If group work outs are unappealing, personal trainers are available.

For more information about personal trainers and group workouts, contact the gymnasium at (928) 269-2727.
