NEW YORK - In preparation for deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the 320th Tactical Psychological Operations Company from Clackamas, Ore., has been training at Fort Dix, N.J. By working long hours during pre-deployment, the unit created space in the schedule to visit the World Trade Center memorial site to pay their respects to the victims and heroes of the 9/11 attacks.

In addition, the soldiers of the 320th remembered one of their own.

Spc. Joseph Jefferies was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan in 2004. The soldiers conducted a fallen comrade ceremony honoring his sacrifice and his memory.

Soldiers then exchanged their full-color, embroidered U.S. flags worn on the uniform for the two-tone infrared flags worn in combat--symbolizing their commitment to the mission and underscoring the connection between the events of 11 years ago and the current mission in Afghanistan. The full-color flags were left at the rail of the memorial in a token of honor and remembrance.

"The 9/11 attacks and our efforts in Afghanistan are closely related," said Capt. Katherine Kennedy, 320th company commander. "We are fortunate that we were able to make time in a busy training schedule to come here. I think it sets the right tone going downrange. The way we perform our mission in Afghanistan should be a reflection on the courage and sacrifice that this place honors, and I think this will help my soldiers internalize that."
