VISTA, Calif. – Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 13 teamed with policemen, sheriffs, fire fighters and emergency medical technicians to promote Patriot Day 2012, a 9/11 remembrance event, held at Faith Lutheran Church, Sept. 9.

“I now declare today CLB-13 Appreciation Day in the city of Vista,” said the Honorable Judy Ritter, Mayor of the city of Vista, during her speech in the main ceremony.

“I am honored to be here today among all of our service members,” said Ritter. “We appreciate what you do for us and for our country. Thank you for your service.”

Also in attendance were World War II veterans and a Pearl Harbor survivor, Al Bodenlos, age 92, who volunteers at the USS Midway Museum and Veterans Association hospital two days a week and travels to Pearl Harbor once a year to speak on behalf of survivors.

“I am honored to be here today,” said Bodenlos. “All survivors stand as one.”

Marines kicked off their morning by explaining static displays to many interested viewers. The displays included 7-ton trucks, humvees, Logistics Vehicle System Replacements, explosive ordinance disposal equipment and crew served weapons. Military working dogs were also present for those in attendance to see.

“It’s a nice experience showing people what we do and what we’re up against every day in hostile areas around the world,” said Staff Sgt. Anthony St. Dennis, explosive ordinance disposal technician, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Detachment, CLB-13, after speaking with families interested in their static display.

Marines presented a color guard detail, commanded by Sgt. Rodney Dabney, supply non-commissioned officer in charge, Supply Detachment, CLB-13 and three-volley salute, commanded by Staff Sgt. Ray Williams, intelligence chief, Headquarters Company, CLB-13, during the ceremony.

“It was a great opportunity to represent the Marine Corps, especially in a 9/11 ceremony,” said Williams. “A lot of Marines have never participated in a volley, and it meant a lot more to them because it was in honor of those lost to September 11th.”
