    7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary)

FORT EUSTIS, Va. — Watercraft vessels assigned to the 7th Sustainment Brigade, sometimes dubbed the ‘Army’s Navy’, were showcased at Fort Eustis’ 3rd port in front of members of the Beckley Recruiting Battalion and their local community partners during a tour, Sept. 14. The recruiting command, whose spectrum spans from West Virginia to Norfolk, Va., came to visit the port to talk community outreach and build partnerships with Fort Eustis leadership.

“One of the main priorities of a recruiting command is to build partnerships with the community to help tell the Army story and be its ambassadors,” said Lt. Col. Chris Wood, recruiting battalion commander. “We are about promoting the Army and we want to be positive role models for our community and schools.”

Col. Lawrence Kominiak, the 7th Sus. Bde. commander, was on hand to welcome the group as they exited their vehicles.

“Welcome to 3rd Port! What is unique about it is that it’s an Army -run facility. At the end of the day we have 28 self-propelled watercraft vessels here. Of the 1,800 soldiers in the watercraft field, most are stationed here,” said Kominiak. “When you ask where the home of watercraft operations is, I say you are standing at the center of it.”

Among the small group of visitors were university and high school teachers, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps instructors, Army Reserve civilian workers and other community partners form the Hampton Roads area. They were all eager to learn what the Army’s watercraft field can offer.

The tour members we able to climb aboard of the Logistic Support Vessel - 6, Spc. James A. Loux, Landing Craft Utility 2011, Chickahominy, and the Large Tug 805, Maj. Gen Winfield Scott. They also had the chance to speak to soldiers from other units in the watercraft field.

After their visit, Wood was grateful for the opportunity.

“We wanted to inform our partners giving us the ability to better tell the Army story and our capabilities in the region,” said Wood. “The better we are in terms of sharing our experiences and communicating with our partners, the better informed they are to tell future soldiers and civilians the Army story.”
