CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Sometimes serving your country is a thankless job, but this month is an exception for a high-performing Marine with 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

The Military Affairs Committee for the Greater Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce recognized Cpl. Samuel L. Warman, a distribution management specialist with 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd MLG, as their service member of the month for August.

The committee honored Warman’s accomplishments with a dinner at the Officer’s Club here, Aug. 20.

The 28-year-old Savannah, Ga., native had an honest, down-to-earth Earth outlook about his selection.

“I have a by-any-means-necessary kind of attitude,” Warman said. “I get a lot of things taken care of in a timely manner, and I’m always changing things to make the proficiency and productivity of the shop better.”

The recognition nevertheless caught him by surprise. Warman, who lightheartedly referred to his nomination process as a “very surprising ordeal,” had no idea he was being put up for the Service member of the Month award.

Warman was modest about his day-to-day work, but his importance to the company was readily apparent.

He takes an active role in mentoring and training the Marines in his shop, and his record of service speaks for itself.

During his two deployments to Afghanistan, Warman contributed significantly to the logistical needs of troops in Helmand Province. He worked to track and deliver equipment throughout the area as well as reuse what was available.

“I delivered 90 percent of all frustrated cargo in Helmand,” said Warman. “We call it frustrated cargo because it will frustrate you. It’s gear that doesn’t make sense. It comes out, and it’s missing paper work; there are no receipts and sometimes the box is destroyed. There’s just a piece of gear and you have to figure it out.”

Figuring it out is no small thing to the Marines in the field, added Warman. His unit was the largest transporter of supplies, and he knew the Marines in the fight relied upon him to complete their mission.

Warman’s accomplishments within the Marine Corps were not the only things that set him apart. He is a husband and father of two. His maturity is quickly recognizable, and his interaction with his peers is both professional and relatable.

He graduated with a degree in criminal justice form Savannah University in 2007 but elected to join the Marine Corps in his search for a job that gave him a sense of meaning and accomplishment. Nearly four years after enlisting, he still refers to his service as the “best job in the world.”

“If I have to stay here until 9:00 at night to help out, well that’s my job,” said Warman. “We’re all one mind when it comes to the mission, and I have hard working Marines. They’re outstanding. At the end of the day, we all go home knowing we got the job done.”

Warman considers himself fortunate to be in his current leadership position, but his ambition continues to grow. He says he is working to model himself on the discipline and professionalism of his leaders, who allowed him to grow into the Marine he is today. It is a favor he hopes to return to his own Marines.

Selection for the award is predicated on an “outstanding record of conduct.” However, it also recognizes candidates for their continuing potential in the Marine Corps, and selected individuals must be recommended for reenlistment. That is the path Warman hopes to follow.
