BOSTON — The oldest ship in the Navy served as the setting for a junior officer’s promotion earlier this month during this year’s Navy Week celebrations, as Defense Contract Management Agency Boston contract administrator and Navy Supply Corps officer Imani Charles became a full lieutenant.

Nearly two dozen ships joined the historic USS Constitution in Boston Harbor for Navy Week. The highlight for many was the 4th of July turnaround cruise of the Constitution, also known as “Old Ironsides,” featuring a 21-gun salute exchange with nearby Fort Independence.

Charles, however, will most likely remember the week for his promotion ceremony aboard the ship. Navy Capt. Russell G. Pendergrass, DCMA Eastern Regional Command commander, presided at the event, attended by Charles’ wife Cindy and many of his DCMA colleagues.

“I could not think of a more fitting setting for Imani's promotion than the USS Constitution, the nation's oldest commissioned warship,” said Navy Capt. Frank Sarra, DCMA Boston commander. He added that Navy Cdr. Matthew Bonner, the Constitution’s commanding officer, and his crew were very accommodating hosts.

“Lt. Imani Charles is a stellar example of the young, patriotic talent that still endures more than 200 years later, willing to answer the nation's call to serve and defend in wartime,” said Sarra. “I am sure this day was a memorable event that Imani and his family will cherish as a highlight of his military career.”

In addition to the 4th of July, Navy Week this year celebrated the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. The Constitution and other tall sailing ships were joined by NATO vessels from Canada, Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom. The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, destroyer USS Gravely and the Navy’s Blue Angels also added to the festivities.

The Constitution is berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard of Boston Harbor. It is the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat and welcomes more than 500,000 visitors a year.
