ABOARD USS Bonhomme Richard, AT SEA – Logistics Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW), Adam Martinez, son of Vincent and Margaret Mercado of Vacaville, Calif., is currently serving aboard amphibious transport dock ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) during a scheduled deployment.
USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed amphibious ready group in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 11 is permanently embarked aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) which is forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan.
“I really enjoy my job as a logistics specialist,” said Martinez. “I work directly for PHIBRON and I’m responsible for managing a budget of around $100,000 to ensure the staff has everything they need when we pull into a port.”
During this deployment, PHIBRON 11’s staff includes over 120 sailors from different commands around the world including Virginia, Hawaii, San Diego and Yokosuka, Japan.
“It’s all about the mission,” said Martinez. “My role in the mission ranges from ordering office supplies we need onboard during the deployment to ordering mass quantities of humanitarian aid in the event of a natural disaster.”
The ARG is scheduled to participate in several exercises that will provide training to help enhance security, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. The exercises include the Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX), Amphibious Integration Exercise (AIT) and Certification Exercise (CERTEX).
“This ship simply cannot run without supplies, said Martinez. “All of the exercises planned require supplies and it’s my job to make sure that we have the items we need to make that happen. This crew we have onboard is pretty new. It wasn’t long ago that we did a hull swap with the Essex and a lot of personnel changed. But we are coming together really well to form a great PHIBRON team.”
More than 2,000 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit are scheduled to join PHIBRON 11 aboard Bonhomme Richard, USS Tortuga (LSD 46) and USS Denver (LPD 9).
“I really wanted to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps,” said Martinez. “He actually joined the U.S. Navy as a cook when he was only 14 years old. So it’s kind of in my heritage to be a sailor.”
Martinez has a wife named Daisysuzette and is a graduate of Will-C-Wood High School in Ridgecrest, Calif.
