FORT MCCLELLAN, Ala. - The 231st Transportation Company, Army Reserve, Athens, Ga., is participating in exercise Vibrant Response 13, a Department of Defense training event led by U.S. Army North. Soldiers from the 231st traveled to Camp Atterbury, Ind. to provide transportation support during the exercise July through August.

The Soldiers of the 231st are providing support to the 167th Theater Sustainment Command, Alabama Army National Guard, Fort McClellan, Ala. These units are working together to ensure that rolling stock—all equipment with wheels—is properly received, stored and distributed during VR13.

“This mission not only provides us the opportunity to support units but also we’re getting the chance to learn and get hands-on experience,” said Staff Sgt. Brenda Piotrowski, noncommissioned officer in charge, 231st Transportation Company.

“Our soldiers are getting a feel for what it is like to run a marshaling yard,” said Piotrowski. “This is our real world mission. We’re practicing ‘train like you fight’. Our soldiers are so eager to learn, it’s good to give them a chance to get hands on experience and learn what a deployment is like.”

The 231st was reactivated in 2010, so being a part of this exercise gives them a chance to mold as a unit. They normally train one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer for annual training, but have never participated in an exercise of this magnitude.

“It’s good for leadership. It gives our younger soldiers a chance to learn what it’s like to be in a deployed environment,” said Spc. Whitney Crabtree, military truck driver, 231st Trans. Company. Crabtree recently joined the 231st after serving in the Active Army component.

“This hands-on training provides an environment for everyone to get a feel for depending on one another,” said Crabtree.

Vibrant Response 13 has provided the chance for the 231st to expand their knowledge, train their soldiers and create working relationships that will benefit them for years to come.

“Everyone is so eager to learn,” said Piotrowski. “It’s really a great experience.”
