SUMTER, S.C. – People from Sumter came together as a community to enjoy friends, food and fireworks at the annual Jammin’ July 4th festival at Dillon Park in Sumter, S.C., July 4, 2012.

Team Shaw and the City and County of Sumter hosted the annual event which included vendors, live music, rides and one of the largest free July Fourth fireworks display in South Carolina.

“It’s really cool that Sumter does stuff like this for the community,” said Spc. Michael Meeks, early warning systems operator with Third Army/ARCENT, who attended the event with his wife Jamie.

Master Sgt. Edwin Leger, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron said his family has been in Sumter nine years and they really feel a part of the community and enjoy the chance to take part in events like Jammin’ July 4th.

People of all ages stood in line for lemonade and funnel cakes while children had their face painted as music and laughter filled the air. Blankets were spread and people settled in to watch the fireworks as the sun set and the night began to cool down.

“[We] come out, have some fun, bring the kids out and let them watch some fireworks and hang out and have a good time,” said Leger.
The event attracts between 30,000 and 40,000 people each year and is an example of Sumter and Team Shaw working together in support of the community.

“The community here in Sumter really appreciates the military being here,” said Leger. “There is a good relationship between Shaw Air Force Base and Sumter.”
