CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Air commandos returning from deployment were welcomed home by the 27th Special Operations Wing leadership, family members and friends during Operation Homecoming at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., July 6.

Operation Homecoming is a monthly event that reunites Cannon's Air Commandos with their loved ones.

Sarah Beard, wife of Senior Airman Shane Beard, 27th Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron, spoke about challenges she faced while her husband was away.

"The hardest thing about him being gone is getting into a routine without him being there because we typically did everything together," she said. "Once he gets back, we get to redevelop our routine together again."

Weekly phone calls, daily emails and a strong support system of friends is what helps many spouses cope with their loved ones being deployed.

"As long as I got to talk to him couple times a week, I was fine," said Beard. "There would sometimes be weeks where I would hear from him more than others and that would spoil me."
As the days drew nearer to the anticipated return of her husband, Beard recalls receiving an email from him.

"My face lit up when he sent me an email that simply said, 'don't forget about your appointment on base on the 6th," said Beard.

These sentiments are shared by many spouses awaiting the return of their loved ones from worldwide deployments.
