VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A Navy Expeditionary Combat Command civilian was selected for the Executive Leadership Development Program for fiscal year 12-13.
Kenneth Jones, program analyst in office of inspector general, earned a seat in the program after competing against six other U.S Fleet Forces finalists.
ELDP, sponsored by the Department of Defense, provides participants with exposure to the roles and mission of the DoD. The program, established in 1985, continues to train future leaders to recognize and respond to the issues that face DoD. The course includes training and exposure in the joint military arena, problem solving and strengthening a commitment to support the warfighter.
“I served in the Navy for 28 years working in leadership positions,” said Jones. “Now as a civilian, I was looking to find programs that could help me get back into the leadership supervisory arena as a DoD employee, and ELDP is a program that will build on leadership skills.”
Jones said he consistently seeks opportunities for self-improvement and is always motivated to look for a challenge. He recalled the statement in the ELDP brochure stating the course is not for everyone because it’s mentally and physically challenging.
“I am always looking to move up and continue to improve myself,” said Jones. “I want to be in a position to reach back and help others. I look forward to being given the opportunity to make a difference. I know I will come back to NECC with a wealth of knowledge to share with my co-workers.”
In addition to being self-motivated, Jones said he could not have accomplished his goals without having strong family support.
"My wife Letecia and daughter Kiana are my motivators,” said Jones. “They are the reasons I'm driven to continue to grow and develop both personally and professionally."
During the 10-month program, Jones will travel to a variety of locations, both in the United States and overseas, to train with the warfighter. He will receive hands-on field experience and opportunities to provide practical application to protocol and etiquette skills, media relations, team building, problem solving, public speaking and briefing techniques.
“We are very proud of him being selected into ELDP here at NECC,” said David Brownell, Jones' superviser. “He was the only individual selected from the fleet. That’s a very good sign of his past accomplishments and his future potential.”
Another NECC staff member, Dr. Jeannine Bennett, was considered for the ELDP. Although not selected this year, she does not plan to give up.
“I am honored that NECC considered me to be a high-potential employee with a history of superior performance,” said Bennett. “I will definitely apply for the program again next year."
NECC is a command element and force provider for integrated maritime expeditionary missions, serving as the single functional command for the Navy’s expeditionary forces.
