MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - The Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society is a non-profit organization that provides financial and educational assistance to retired and active duty Marines and sailors, and their dependents.

The society provides interest-free loans and education grants as well as various classes for budgeting and living a healthy life.

“Our goal is to help Marines and sailors achieve economic self-sufficiency,” said Rita Fountain, director of NMCRS aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River. “Sometimes people run into hard times, and sometimes there are emergencies that require assistance. Everybody needs help sometimes. We like to be that help.”

The NMCRS offers interest-free loans for a variety of reasons such as emergency transportation, funeral expenses and other unforeseen emergencies. Along with the loan, the Marine or sailor will receive a budget to help stay on track.

“Sometimes money isn’t as helpful as education,” said Fountain. “A lot of service members haven’t had much experience with being financially responsible before they joined. Knowing exactly how much is coming in and how much is going out, can go a long way.”

The NMCRS also offers quick-assist loans that can cover a broader range of emergencies.

“Quick-assist loans are a way for Marines and sailors to get interest-free loans for up to 300 dollars in a matter of minutes,” said Fountain. “As long as they are in good standing and meet the requirements, they can receive a loan for a wide variety of financial emergencies.”

Quick-assist loans can be paid back in three to 10 months, as long as the service member has enough time on their contract to repay it.

Another service the NMCRS offers assistance with is finding education loans.

“We utilize various programs that help service members and their families attain higher education,” said Fountain.

The majority of the staff aboard the air station NMCRS facility are military spouse volunteers.

“We are eager to help military families,” said Margie Rogers, chair of volunteers. “We know what it’s like to be in a military family, and we really have your best interest at heart.”

If you would like to inquire about assistance or are interested in volunteering your service, visit the website at http://nmcrs.org or call the air station NMCRS office at 910-449-6431.
