    Story by Sgt. James Taylor

    U.S. Army Reserve Command

FORT McCOY, Wis. – Spc. Ahlam Gutierrez, an army trumpet player in the 800th Army Band representing the 63rd Regional Support Command, wanted to represent his unit at the 2012 U.S. Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition at Fort McCoy, Wis., to show why his unit stands out.

“It means a lot to me that I actually made it to this level and that I get the experience of competing with reservists from all over the U.S.,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez, who joined the Army Reserve after graduating high school in 2010, said he is trying to make a career out of what he loves the most in life, his music.

“I love being in the reserve band,” Gutierrez said. “I like music way too much to do anything else.”

He explained that his biggest motivators in the Army so far are his non-commissioned officers. They keep him active and engaged in music between his unit’s monthly battle assemblies.

“I get together with at least one of my NCOs more than once a week to just play,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez has many things he wants to accomplish in his life, and he said many of those goals have to do with the military. He wants to go into the active Army and retire as a soldier. He wants to perform in the Army Soldier Show and also play in an honor guard band.

“My ultimate goal is to be in the Army Band,” he said. “It would be amazing to travel the world and play for all types of people.”

Gutierrez said he wants to get the truth out about what the Army really represents and all the things it has to offer.

“I want to represent what the Army really does, because a lot of people don’t have the right image about us,” he said. “I want to get the word out about all the good opportunities we have here; the money, the housing, the benefits, the schooling options and even the ability to see the world.”

Although some people may stereotype a band member, Gutierrez has the ability to take home the title of Army Reserve Soldier of the Year.
