    U.S. Army Reserve Command

FORT MCCOY, Wis. -- Armed with the tools to be the Army Reserve’s next best warrior, Spc. Jonathan P. Chacon continues to study his technical and tactical skills during the 2012 Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition.

Chacon, an ammunition specialist, from La Puente, Calif., assigned to the 163rd Ordinance Company, 79th Support Sustainment Command, entered the competition because his mentor, Sgt. Donovan Brunkalla, challenged him. He accepted the task.

Challenge is what also motivated Chacon to join the Army Reserve. He could not resist the opportunity of representing his unit in the competition. A distance runner in high school, Chacon trained in the hills of Mount San Antonio College in California to prepare for the ruck march.

Although Chacon worked hard on his physical conditioning, he knew he needed to improve one weakness.

“I knew I was weak in land navigation, but thanks to Sgt. Brunkalla and my unit I am now proficient,” said Chacon. “Sgt. Brunkalla taught me slow is smooth and smooth is fast.”

Chacon also said Brunkalla and his unit helped him prepare by having him assemble and dissemble individual weapons blindfolded.

“I don’t think I would have made it this far without support from my mentor, my unit and my amazing girlfriend, Adair Oropeza,” said Chacon. “She also shoots at the range with me at times.”

The United Parcel Service worker joined the Army Reserve for a challenge.

“Being in this competition is a win-win situation,” said Chacon. “Even if I am not named as the Army Reserve’s Best Warrior, I will have enhanced my basic soldier skills while having fun.”
A good support group, a good mentor and an amazing girlfriend makes the Best Warrior Competition a fun event for Chacon.
