CAMP SHORABAK, Afghanistan – A large supply convoy arrived here at the Afghan National Army’s forward supply depot July 6.
The convoy of a few dozen trucks arrived from the ANA’s National Supply Depot from Kabul with supplies to help the 215th Maiwand Corps’ operations during the annual fighting season and training at the Regional Military Training Center Southwest.
Humvee engines, medical supplies, spare parts, uniforms and equipment for RMTC-SW, vehicle fluids, bunk beds, even fire-fighting equipment arrived from Kabul, said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Scott Taylor, a logistics adviser with Regional Logistics Supply Center, Regional Support Command Southwest.
The ANA soldiers assigned to the FSD unloaded everything and managed the whole process, noted Taylor, who is deployed from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
It took about four days to off load and put in the warehouses, said U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Chris Howard, the staff non-commissioned officer-in-charge of the FSD advisers.
After everything is offloaded from the trucks, the ANA will inventory what arrived.
The ANA will handle the inventory and the U.S. service members with RLSC will be here to offer guidance if it’s needed, Howard said.
Taylor said everything will be matched up to what is on the inventory sheets sent down with the convoy from Kabul. A liaison officer will verify the count of what was on the convoy with the ANA and start matching up requests from the brigades.
“And then it’ll go out,” Taylor said.
They may need help to identify supplies in the trucks, Howard noted.
After the inventory is completed the 215th Corps’ brigades will have to request supplies based on a list drawn up by the various sections of the FSD.
“We’ll give them a list of what’s on hand so they’re not blinding asking,” U.S. Air Force Capt. Amanda Davis, a medical logistics adviser with the Medical Training Advisory Group, RSC-SW.
One part of the shipment was medical supplies. Davis, who is deployed from Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., worked with ANA 1st Lt. Shafikullah, the medical logistics officer for the 215th, and his soldiers to get the supplies offloaded.
The types of medical supplies delivered from Kabul were based on an Authorized Stockage List, Davis explained.
“They’re sending down supplies they know that we need for the fighting season,” Davis explained. The supplies will put the “FSD at 100-percent stock,” she said,
As the stock levels drop, Shafikullah can see the needs.
“It’s a starting point,” she said of the delivery.
For the medical side Davis said this is the first big push of what was needed.
“The mentors and ANA put their brains together and came up with a list of what they needed as far as their capabilities,” she explained.
The delivery was also the first time a majority of the supplies were put in a soon-to-be opened FSD here. The medical supplies were offloaded into new warehouses on Camp Shorabak.
“I knew I’d put stuff in them, just not this fast,” said U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Joe Strumolo, a logistics advisor with the Regional Logistics Support Center, Regional Support Command Southwest.
As he said that, an ANA soldier was driving a forklift of medical supplies from a truck into the FSD’s medical warehouse.
