QUIMISTAN, Honduras – Missouri National Guard engineers from four different companies have joined together to finish a months-long project to build a clinic in Quimistan as part of U.S. Army South’s Beyond the Horizon-Honduras exercise.

The clinic will serve residents of the town and those who live in the nearby mountains, said Sgt. 1st Class Charles Wickes, of the 220th Engineer Company in Festus.

“The doctors and nurses are ready to move in as soon as we leave,” said Wickes, who lives in Union, Mo. “They are currently doing their services in a police station.”

soldiers from the 220th Engineer Company,of Festus, the 880th Engineer Team, of Perryville, 1138th Engineer Company, of Farmington and Frederickstown, and 1438th Engineer Company, of Macon and Kirksville, are currently putting the finishing touches on the clinic. The building will have several clinical rooms, a pharmacy, a records room and offices, said 1st Lt. Kevin Laplante, executive officer of the 220th Engineer Company.

Among the finishing touches the Guardsmen were putting on the clinic was a water storage tower, Laplante said. Because of recurring issues with water pressure in the area, water sometimes runs out. The tower will give the clinic a reserve for those times when water isn’t flowing.

While one crew worked on making sure the clinic had the water it needed, others were hard at work ensuring water the clinic didn’t need had a way to drain from the yard. soldiers from the 220th, including Sgt. David Koenig and Sgt. Matt Schmitt, both of St. Louis, were setting up a drainage system for the area.

“We are going to guide the water away from the building and run it into the street for drainage,” Laplante said.

Inside the nearly-completed clinic, soldiers from the 1438th were working on painting and laying down tile. For many of the soldiers, the experience was different from their usual training, said Staff Sgt. Stephen Keene, of Columbia.

“Some of the soldiers have painted a little bit, but most had never done the tile or grout work,” Keene said. “It’s been really great as both a cultural and professional experience.”

The Beyond the Horizon-Honduras mission is scheduled to end in early July.
