FORT BLISS, Texas - Morale, Welfare and Recreation hosted an open house for Fort Bliss’ new clubhouse at Underwood Golf Complex Friday.

The open house started at 9 a.m. with more than 130 golfers participating in the USAA sponsored four-man best ball golf scramble. The greens fees, the golf carts and the lunch afterward were free to everyone participating.

After the tournament, the players were invited to the Golden Tee restaurant to sit down, relax and enjoy the camaraderie of other golfers.

The staff at Golden Tee restaurant prepared tables draped in white with deli sandwiches, a fruit plate, boiled shrimp and a roast that took 10 hours to cook. The center table had an ice sculpture and a yellow and white frosted cake with “Welcome to the Golden Tee” written on it.

Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr., Fort Bliss garrison commander, gave the opening remarks and officially dedicated the building to the Soldiers of Fort Bliss. The crowd applauded when Simonelli said, “Welcome to your new clubhouse.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Donald Felt, command sergeant major of Installation Management Command, central region, traveled from Fort Hood, Texas, to commemorate the open house and participate in the golf tournament.

“The Soldiers of Fort Bliss deserve this new clubhouse,” said Felt. “This building will help a wide range of people, not just golfers.”

The open house was a chance for the pro-shop and the Golden Tee restaurant to showcase to the public what the clubhouse’s facilities are capable of achieving for a golf outing or a party.

“We have more scheduled golf tournaments this year than we have had in the last two years,” said Bobby Kaerwer, the golf pro and manager at Underwood Golf Complex. “With the new clubhouse, we have plenty of room to display our golf equipment and clothes so our sales have gone up quite a bit.”

“The Golden Tee has already hosted several parties, ” said Claudine Morgan, the manager of Golden Tee restaurant. “We are already getting party reservations for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season.”

The clubhouse has more to offer than just the pro-shop and the restaurant. The locker rooms are equipped with personal lockers that golfers can rent so they can secure their golf clubs there, take a shower and use the fitness center.

The new clubhouse with all of its facilities, visual appeal and space gives golfers and patrons a place to relax.

“This is a beautiful clubhouse and pro-shop,” said Larry Allmann, who retired from working at the old clubhouse at Underwood four years ago. “I have been to a lot of golf courses and this clubhouse compares with the best of them, even country clubs.”
