MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - The 9th Semper Fit Wrestling Championship was held Saturday, at the Semper Fit center here. This year’s tournament was dedicated in memory of fallen Marines and sailors since 9/11 for Memorial Day.
“At the beginning of tournament the kids gave a big oohrah to show their appreciation of the sacrifi ce of service members,” said Clark Abbey, the youth sports coordinator at Semper Fit.
More than 120 wrestlers participated in the all day event, which was separated in two sessions; the morning, ages 10 and under, and the afternoon, ages 11 and older. Nine wrestling teams from surrounding communities attended. This was one of 12 tournaments held during the spring season of the Hawaii USA Amateur Wrestling Association.
“The tournament showcases wrestling in Hawaii and also allows the base an opportunity to show we can hold a good tournament,” Abbey said. “Every club is required to hold at least one tournament, and we have received a lot of compliments that we have the best tournament in the association.”
Marines and sailors from Headquarters Battalion, Combat Logistics Battalion 3, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 24 and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacifi c, volunteered to help matside.
“Watching the kids go out on the mat and being able to watch them succeed with something I taught them is a really good feeling,” said Bryan Vesce, a volunteer coach with the Semper Fit Wrestling Club from Kailua.
All coaches for the Semper Fit Wrestling Club are volunteers including active duty service members like Master Sgt. Tim Greenleaf. Abbey attributes Greenleaf for the recent growth and success of the Semper Fit Wrestling Club. The Semper Fit Wrestling Club started as the Kaneohe Bay Wrestling Club in 2003. It has grown and now has more than 30 members. The club operates through Marine Corps Community Services.
