CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Military Spouse Appreciation Day has been observed annually since 1984 to recognize the contributions, commitment, and support provided by the spouses of the men and women in uniform serving our country.

This year, Lincoln Military Housing reflected on the selfless service of the unsung heroes by rewarding them with a breakfast buffet, free giveaways, take-home activities and a raffle with door prizes galore at the Heroes Manor District Club House, April 15.

“This is one of the most important events of the year because you all are here and spend more time on this property than your spouse,” said Jim Brady, vice president and general manager with Lincoln Military Housing. “We just want to recognize you and show you how much we appreciate you.”

To show their gratitude, Lincoln Military Housing gave away four full rooms of furniture as well as a washer and dryer set to those who were lucky enough to secure a winning raffle ticket.

“They always say (non-commissioned officers) are the backbone of the Marine Corps but, honestly, I think it’s all of you,” said Brady. “I kind of know a little bit about the challenges you face. My wife stood by me for 26 years in the Marine Corps.”

Bianca Strzalkowski, wife of Gunnery Sgt. Ronald Strzalkowski and the 2011 Military Spouse of the Year, is the perfect example of the dedication military spouses have to their significant other as well as their country.

As a military wife of 10 years and mother of three, Strzalkowski spent her time volunteering with various organizations, such as U.S. Veteran Corps, National Military Family Association and the Marine Corps Family Readiness program. Also, as a Lifestyles Insights Networking Knowledge Skills mentor, she traveled the East Coast to educate spouses on the various aspects of military life and is currently the director of Membership and Volunteer Outreach for Blue Star Families.

“Our military spouses are a vital part of communities across America and around the world,” said President Barack Obama, in his presidential proclamation to Military Spouse Appreciation Day. “We know them as our neighbors and friends, colleagues and coaches, teachers and nurses. They move from duty station to duty station, picking up their families and careers whenever their country asks. They keep their households running while dealing with the strain of deployment. They support our wounded warriors, preserve the legacies of our fallen, and find ways to give back to our country day after day.”

The spouse appreciation event was the third of many events to come at the Heroes Manor District Club House throughout the summer to include pool parties and dive-in movies.
