ROTA, Spain - Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 volunteered their time assisting the all-volunteer staff at the Rota Animal Welfare League Shelter, a temporary home for dogs and cats that have been abandoned, May 14.
Seven seabees from Alfa Company spent the day cleaning out holding pens, playing with and walking the animals and providing them with some needed attention.
“Cleaning up the animals living area provided them a better place to live,” said Equipment Operator 2nd Class Dustin Beach. “It felt great to help the animals in need.”
The Alfa Company seabees plan on continuing their volunteer project at the RAWLS throughout the duration of the deployment.
“Volunteer work assists in personal development and is important in maintaining a positive image of the Navy,” said Ensign Scott Christman. “It is good for the troops, good for the organization being helped and good for the Navy.”
The seabees have spent several hours cleaning up pine needles, pulling weeds, and removing dead tree branches from many of the dog pens. This has enabled the staff to use pens that were previously unusable.
“Volunteering always brings me a feeling of accomplishment,” said Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Michael McCracken, “I know I have just given back and helped in a meaningful way. I look forward to continuing in the future.”
NMCB 3 is an expeditionary naval construction element currently assigned to U.S. 6th Fleet's Commander, Task Force 68, to provide construction, engineering, and security services that support national strategy, naval power projection, humanitarian assistance and contingency operations.
