NACO, Honduras – An U.S. Army Reservist and Philippine native has deployed for his second rotation this year for Beyond the Horizon 2012 Honduras.

Sgt. 1st Class Ramon Jayme, from Daly City, Calif. and an intelligence analyst and information operations specialist with the 152nd Theater Information Group, works with the information operations section for the BTH exercise. Jayme served in Honduras during the first rotation in April and is currently serving on the third rotation.

“The IO mission is to inform and influence the local population on the positive aspects of the host nation and United States partnership,” Jayme said.

The BTH mission is designed to foster goodwill and improve relations between the U.S. and the Honduran government. A strong relationship between these two countries is vital in working to solve regional issues. The IO team helps build those critical relationships.

“We regularly interview and engage key leaders of a village or town and ensure that they understand what our mission is in that particular area,” Jayme said. “We also try to get feedback on how they feel about U.S. Soldier’s providing humanitarian assistance such as medical treatments, health screenings, and animal vaccinations.”

When the IO team travels off the base to visit the population, they spend a lot of time at local schools.

“I really enjoy being able to meet with teachers and elementary students, especially the younger children,” Jayme said. “The children are very welcoming and curious. They haven’t seen very many U.S. Soldiers in the area before, and that sparks their interest.”

Jayme is fluent in Spanish, which gives him the ability to socialize with the school children.

“The teachers are also very welcoming and want to know if we can assist them in getting school supplies because they are limited in notebooks, crayons, blackboards and pencils that they can use to teach with,” Jayme said.

When Jayme went home after his first rotation ended, he gathered school supply donations from Soldiers and units. He plans to give the supplies to students at two of the BTH work sites, Ramon Amay Amador and Cento de Salud Flores de Oriente.

Jayme has served 39 years with the U.S. military. He has deployed three times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Places of assignment include the Philippines, Afghanistan, Panama and Honduras.

Some of Jayme’s military awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal with one star, and the Armed Forces Medal. He has also been recommended for the Bronze Star. He is airborne and parachute rigger qualified and wears a Combat Action Badge.

Jayme is retired from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after working for 25 years as special agent.

In his retirement, Jayme works for the city and county of San Francisco as a security officer for the San Francisco War Memorial and the Performing Arts Center.

During his spare time Jayme enjoys spending time with his 4-year-old granddaughter. He likes taking her to the park, to Disney Land, sailing and camping. She is curious about having a grandparent in the military. Jayme says he tells her, “Grandpa wears the uniform to help protect you.”
