FORT BLISS, Texas - Soldiers of the 501st Brigade Support Battalion were awakened at the early hours of 3 a.m. in an outpost near the simulated village, Adowa, on Fort Bliss.
They were surprised to hear that two film crewmen from a popular Polish news channel TVN, were stuck in the dirt just down the road.
TVN’s U.S.-based newscaster Marcin Wrona and his Polish videographer, flew in to El Paso’s International Airport around midnight, rented a compact sedan and followed their escort team through the sand-filled, corkscrew trails of Fort Bliss. It did not take long until the sedan’s wheels dug itself into a hole. The Polish crew was stuck and in need of a tow. Luckily, 501st BSB’s soldiers came out with a Humvee and towed the compact car to an easier to traverse location.
Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, participated in an Air Assault raid in the simulated village called Waigali. The Polish film crew was able to board the Chinook and film the “Spartans” on their mission. They captured Bravo Company on film in a key leader engagement mission and highlighted how the “Spartans” handled themselves on the battlefield during multiple attacks from insurgents on the simulated village.
Later, the U.S. correspondent from Poland was able to conduct an interview with 1-36th Infantry Regiment’s Battalion commander, Lt. Col. Kevin Admiral.
Wrona : Sir, is this air assault raid on the village similar to what you will be doing in Afghanistan?
Admiral : I believe so. What we are trying to do here is replicate the conditions on the battlefield in Afghanistan.
Wrona : Sir, the U.S. Military has had a tough time in Afghanistan this year, what will you do to ensure you are doing the right thing?
Admiral : The Ready First Combat Team has had cultural awareness training, and language training to help us communicate better with the local villagers, the Afghan National Police, and the Afghan National Army. During Iron Focus we are training on our escalation of force to better our soldiers when they deploy to Afghanistan for the first time.
Before leaving Fort Bliss, the Polish film crew got the opportunity to interview another soldier. Spec. Andrzej Krot from Alpha Company, 501st Brigade Support Battalion grew up in Poland and was able to conduct the interview in his native Polish language.
