    Afghan National Army senior leadership visits Camp Garmsir

    CAMP GARMSIR, Afghanistan - Senior Afghan National Army officials visited the soldiers of 1st Brigade, 215th Corps, here, May 2.

    The visit was led by Lt. Gen. Mohammad Akram, the ANA vice chief of general staff, and Maj. Gen. Sayeed Malook, the 215th Corps commanding general, who traveled to Camp Garmsir to meet with Brig. Gen. Mohammad Ali Sujaie, the1st Brigade, 215th Corps commanding general and his U.S. Marine partner, Col. Roger B. Turner, the Regimental Combat Team 5 commanding officer.

    Prior to the arrival of ANA senior leadership, Sujaie and Turner, along with their respective staffs, met to discuss the future of the ANA and Marine partnership in southern Helmand province.

    The partnered command staffs held a lengthy discussion on the pending transition of lead security authority to Afghan forces across southern Helmand, the, the progress of the government led poppy eradication campaign, and future plans to better combat the narcotics trade.

    Shortly after arriving at Camp Garmsir, Akram and Malook, flanked by their staffs, addressed the troops of 1st Brigade aboard the camp’s parade deck.

    During their speeches, the generals each took time to congratulate the soldiers on their work, urged them to continue to take the fight to the enemy in southern Helmand, and discussed future plans for Afghan security forces across the country.

    As the speeches came to a close, the officials formed together to present a group of nine soldiers with certificates of achievement for their exceptional work.

    As coalition forces continue to shift into an advisory role, Afghan forces continue to demonstrate their ability to operate independently and provide secure and stable future for the people of Afghanistan.

    Editor’s Note: The Afghan National Army’s 1st Brigade, 215th Corps is currently partnered with Regimental Combat Team 5, 1st Marine Division (Forward), which works in partnership with the Afghan National Security Forces and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to conduct counterinsurgency operations. The unit is dedicated to securing the Afghan people, defeating insurgent forces, and enabling the ANSF assumption of security responsibility within its operations in order to support the expansion of stability, development and legitimate governance.
