CAMP HENRY, South Korea - Soldiers from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command wore blue jeans to work April 27 in support of Denim Day in Area IV.

Denim Day is a movement to educate people about sexual assault and rape which was triggered by the ruling of the Italian Supreme Court to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans too tight for an attacker to remove.

“Soon after the ruling to overturn the conviction, the Italian Parliament all wore jeans in protest to say that no matter what you are wearing, there is still no reason for you to be raped,” said Maj. Doris Haynes, 19th ESC sexual harassment/assault response and prevention coordinator. “Your clothes do not give someone an alibi for rape.”

Denim Day for Area IV fell in April which is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“I’m supporting Denim Day which is for sexual harassment awareness, because it’s important to bring the issue out and make people aware that it needs to be stopped.” said Pfc. Justin T. Hill, 19th ESC Chaplain’s Office chaplain assistant.

Along with wearing blue jeans, soldiers attached green ribbons to their shirts to show their support for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
