Fort Carson hosts Safety Day Staff Sgt. Craig Cantrell

Motorcyclists line up for safety inspections at Fort Carson's annual motorcycle safety day, April 18. The day started with a 13-mile ride around Fort Carson. Once all riders returned safely, they were placed in groups of 20 before traveling to Garden of the Gods where they were treated to a lunch provided by the 43rd Sustainment Brigades Family Readiness Group.

FORT CARSON, Colo. – The Fort Carson Safety Office invited Soldiers, civilians and Family members to a Safety Day Fair at the Special Events Center on post, April 18.

“The goal of Safety Day is to increase safety awareness and focus personnel on some of the hazards associated with summer activities,” said Paul Burns, safety director, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson.

The event featured 26 booths and displays representing a variety of agencies from Fort Carson and the surrounding communities.

“We conduct Safety Day as a way to reach out to our Fort Carson team as a whole,” said Burns. “Whether you are a soldier, an employee or a family member, we have something for you.”

The Fort Carson Safety Day is different from a unit safety stand down, because it is not a classroom event, explained Burns. The event is open to patrons, who are free to roam and learn free safety tips from trained professionals.

Patrons spoke with safety representatives from a variety of organizations on topics to include firearms safety, fire safety, wildlife conservation, and programs offered to the Fort Carson community.

“It’s good to see that there was a good crowd inside taking advantage of it all,” said Col. John Etzenbach, commander, Dental Activity, Fort Carson. “A lot of professional people showcased their area of expertise … for everybody else to learn from.”

Some displays entertained and instructed patrons on safety measures, and others provided information about programs offered at Fort Carson.

Colorado Springs Utilities displayed a 10,000 volt model of a downed power line and instructed onlookers how to react if they ever come upon one.

The Fort Carson Army Substance Abuse Program provided a driving course where attendants donned visual impairment goggles to replicate driving intoxicated while navigating a course of orange cones.

“With the golf carts, we have them see how their vision changes when they are intoxicated,” said Edgardo Menjivar, prevention coordinator, Fort Carson Army Substance Abuse Program. “The whole purpose is to have fun but to understand they will save lives if they do not drive intoxicated.”

ASAP was one of the many programs represented at the Safety Day Fair accessible to soldiers, their families and the post community.

The Safety Day Fair also sponsored a motorcycle ride around the post and through the Garden of the Gods.

“Safety Day is a great opportunity for people to learn about programs on post, as well as activities in the area,” said Michael Henderson, recreation assistant, Adventure Program and Education, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Fort Carson organizations can request information through the Safety Office for unit-level training that emphasizes the importance of safety education, said Burns.
