MARINE DEPOT MAINTENANCE COMMAND PLANT BARSTOW, Calif. — Hundreds of employees gathered in a warehouse aboard the Yermo annex of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Feb. 23, to watch a live-feed broadcast from Albany, Ga., of the Marine Depot Maintenance Command activation ceremony.

The ceremony officially combined the Maintenance Centers at Albany, Ga., and Barstow, Calif., under a single headquarters with two operating plant locations. For the last 50 years, the two maintenance centers have received ground combat equipment from the Operating Forces for dismantling, cleaning, repairing, restoring, rebuilding and testing to ensure mission capable assets were readily available to support the warfighter.

“Today is an extra momentous occasion for the Marine Corps,” said Maj. Gen. Charles Hudson, commanding general, Marine Corps Logistics Command.

"This milestone that we're seeing today is the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people over the course of the last 12 to 14 months, but it is only a milestone. We still have much work to do," said Hudson.

The creation of MDMC to exercise command and control over both maintenance facilities enables the Marine Corps to reduce overhead, streamline and standardize their business processes and decrease their operating costs on the logistics side of the house.

In the next five years, MDMC plans to reduce depot maintenance overhead costs by 9 to 13 percent, equating to a $40 to $60 million in savings.

Chris Maine, head of the Master Workload Division, MDMC, Barstow, said the consolidation of both maintenance centers is a great strategic move and will enable a standardization of depot business and production processes that was not possible before.

“We are continually moving forward and remaining focused on accomplishing the mission,” Maine said.

Hudson also spoke of the rich history of both maintenance centers beginning with Maintenance Center Albany’s doors opening in 1954, followed by Maintenance Center Barstow’s establishment seven years later. Comparing the past with the present, Hudson thanked employees on both coasts for a job extremely well done, saying what employees are doing today is similar to the retrograding of equipment done during the Korean War and Vietnam.

“The maintenance facilities at Barstow and Albany enabled Marines to perform tasks back then, much like we are doing today in Afghanistan,” Hudson remarked.

The activation of MDMC achieves quite the balance between fiscal efficiency and meeting the unique requirements of the Marine Corps as America’s force in readiness.
