NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan commandos partnered with coalition special operations forces killed more than 40 insurgents in response to an unprovoked attack on a security shura with the district governor at the Kamdesh district, April 12.

Members of 3rd Company, 1st Commando Kandak, were holding a shura with the district governor to discuss ways to disrupt enemy networks who attempt to operate freely in Kamdesh district, intimidating local residents. They were discussing ways to increase stability and security of the villages for the local populace, when insurgents attacked, killing a local national woman and an Afghan Local Policeman.

Afghan commandos, with assistance from coalition special operations forces, returned fire to defend the village. One local woman and six commandos were injured and received first aid and were medically evacuated to a coalition medical facility.

This attack was another example of total disregard for human life by insurgents. It also highlighted the commitment by Afghan National Security Forces to protect the people of Afghanistan and promote peace and stability in the region.

“This operation demonstrates the commando’s ability to handle perceived and real threats during quick reaction exchanges,” said Lt. Col. William Linn, Special Operations Task Force East commander. “Afghan and partner forces share a common interest in protecting the lives of innocent Afghans and reducing the threats to the villages.”

The Afghan National Army commandos provide a strategic response capability for the government of Afghanistan and conduct special military operations in support of Afghan Security Police and their objectives.
