BAGRAM, Afghanistan – The III Corps and Fort Hood command team visited soldiers of Task Force Medical-Afghanistan at the Staff Sgt. Heathe N. Craig Joint Theater Hospital, April 6.

Lt. Gen. Donald Campbell, III Corps and Fort Hood commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur Coleman, III Corps and Fort Hood command sergeant major, visited deployed Fort Hood soldiers in Afghanistan, including soldiers assigned to the 1st Medical Brigade and the 1st Cavalry Division, both units that are based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

“I am absolutely impressed with the units that I have pushed out the door,” said Campbell. “The work they did prior to coming here, what they have been able to accomplish here in a short period, for the two units that I have seen so far, has been incredible.”

Task Force MED-A’s staff of doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, surgeons and neurologists briefed the III Corps command team on the progress of medical needs and assets here.

Every day across Afghanistan, Task Force MED-A sees on average 1,480 patients, manages over $95,000 in pharmaceuticals and inspects over $2 million in food.

“It was great to have the III Corps leadership on ground to see about what the III Corps units are doing which helps validate the training they put us through, which was absolutely the best I have seen, especially with separate brigades to go to war,” said Col. Bruce McVeigh, a native of Westerly, R.I., Task Force MED-A commander.

In order to prepare for their deployment to Afghanistan, the soldiers of the 1st Medical Brigade went through rigorous training scenarios, qualifications and pre-deployment requirements that Fort Hood units and agencies helped to make possible.

“What they are doing is incredible,” said Campbell. “I have to take a little bit of pride in it; it’s the training they accomplished back at Fort Hood and the hard work that they put forth, to get here.”

According to McVeigh, the training and hard work that the medical teams went through before their deployment ensures that anyone that comes to them for any medical assistance, knows that they can walk away knowing that someone here really does care.

“Dedicated leaders and soldiers are making a difference here,” said Campbell.
