Havelock, NC, native spends nine years volunteering to inspire sons, give back

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A communications officer with 2nd Marine Logistics Group received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for his dedication to community wellness during a ceremony aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 10.

Maj. LeRon Lane, a native of Havelock, N.C., spent the last nine years volunteering, mentoring, donating and organizing in his communities, all in addition to his duties as a Marine, husband and father of two young sons.

Lane donated thousands of dollars to families displaced by natural disasters, mentored underprivileged children, and coordinated transportation for religious services. He organized food drives, served as scorekeeper for local Annapolis, Md., football teams, and assisted Girl Scout Troop 59 by delivering cookies to wounded service members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center in Fort George G. Meade, Md.

Lane cited one main reason why he stays so involved.

“I want my sons to understand that they didn’t just wake up and get what they have,” Lane said during his award ceremony speech. “It took hard work, and we give a little bit back because we are pretty blessed.”
