SAVANNAH, Ga. – Wounded and injured soldiers at Fort Benning, Ga., now have a new $33.2 million Warrior in Transition Complex to help them rehabilitate or transition back into duty or civilian life. The complex, recently completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, provides quality housing and assistance for Soldiers during the healing process, as part of the Army’s Warrior Care and Transition Program.
Located on Marne Road adjacent to Martin Army Community Hospital, the complex includes an administrative building, soldier and family assistance center, and five-story barracks facility. Construction on the complex began March 2010 and was completed November 2011. The project was executed in two phases and two separate contract actions - one for the barracks and overall site work and the second for the administrative facilities and SFAC.
“This complex honors the sacrifice of our wounded soldiers and their families, by providing them access to quality health care in a convenient, stress free environment,” said Corps Project Manager Ruben del Rio.
B.L. Harbert International of Birmingham, Ala., constructed the 120,400-square-foot barracks facility, which houses 200 soldiers. The facility consists of two apartment-style floor plans. The first is an 890-square
foot, two-bedroom, two-bath apartment with a shared kitchen, living room and laundry room. The second floor plan offers a 679-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a shared kitchen.
The two-story battalion headquarters and administrative facility, totaling 27,803-square-feet, was constructed by Osborne Company of North Carolina, Inc. This facility houses the staff that manages the daily operations and activities of the recovering soldiers. A 14,140 square-foot SFAC, also constructed by Osborne Company, provides a one-stop location of support for Warriors in Transition and their families. The center is staffed with personnel who provide guidance, assistance, and information on finances, childcare, family advocacy, military personnel issues, logistics, legal assistance, and a variety of other support services to help speed the recovery of WT’s and help their families. The SFAC also includes a child activity center and playground area, covered courtyard, break room, and full kitchen.
Like all Army construction, the WT Complex will incorporate environmentally friendly features. These “green” buildings will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards. Eco-friendly features include the use of energy efficient building materials, lighting and ventilation systems.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District manages and oversees a multi-billion dollar military construction program at 11 Army and Air Force installations in Georgia and North Carolina.
