MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Local community and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point leaders broke ground to mark the beginning of construction of a new bachelors enlisted quarters aboard MCAS Cherry Point March 27.

The estimated $37.5 million project will provide state-of-the-art accommodations for approximately 460 Marines.
The groundbreaking comes almost exactly a year after the ribbon cutting on the air station’s two new barracks completed in March 2011.

“We raised the bars high when the two new barracks were completed last year,” said Cmdr. Kevin K. Juntunen, deputy director of facilities for the air station. “Now, we raise the bars even higher with the start of the new BEQ.”

The contract for the building was awarded June 2, 2011, as part of the 2011 budget. The building is scheduled to be completed by September 2013.

“Today marks a true accomplishment for Cherry Point,” said Col. Philip J. Zimmerman, commanding officer for MCAS Cherry Point. “We plan to get out of the 1980s dorm style of living and make it a great place for Marines to live.”

Most of the existing barracks are 20 to 25 years old, said Juntunen.

Juntunen said the new quarters will have outdoor areas for recreational activities, including lighted basketball courts, a sand volleyball court and two horse shoe sand pits.

“We want more for our Marines,” Zimmerman said.

The new buildings will also be more energy efficient and cost-effective, providing a more modern living environment.
Zimmerman said the old barracks will also receive an upgrade.

“We are providing better living for our Marines,” Zimmerman said. “We want to give our total commitment to our Marines.”
