CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan—Coalition forces gathered March 1, for a Regional Afghan National Security Force Community of Interest conference to discuss developments across various Afghan forces stationed in Helmand and Nimroz provinces.

The event, organized jointly by personnel from the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) and the British army as part of Regional Command Southwest, delivered the quarterly meeting. The forum gathers various branches of ANSF together in the same room to discuss best practices and development for the future.

Approximately 140 individuals attended the meeting, including provincial governors, Abdul Karim Barahawi of Nimroz province and Mohammad Golab Mangal, of Helmand province. Senior leaders from Afghan forces also attended.

The second aspect of the event is to provide a strategic-level forum where coalition forces can discuss issues with the ANSF.

The conversations are one of the key tools that RC (SW) uses to ensure the ANSF continue to develop and provide security for the local population.

Afghan forces are now discussing how to better coordinate their efforts down to the district level.

Key leaders from different Afghan forces, such as the army, border patrol and police units, shared how coalition forces have helped them, as well as strategies for improving security.

The Afghanistan Uniformed Police commander of the 707th Zone, Maj. Gen. Asmatullah Dawlatzai discussed how to improve security concerns and said coalition forces have provided support in many ways, including providing medical care for his police force.

Afghanistan National Army commander of the 215th Corps, Maj. Gen. Sayed Maluk, thanked coalition forces for educational training centers based at Camp Leatherneck, as well as in the capital of Helmand province, Lashkar Gah.

He said because of the training, vital routes in Washir district have become more secure.

Mangal talked about the progress under commanding general for II MEF, Maj. Gen. John A. Toolan and the RC (SW) team. Barahawi said there is now much more coordination between Afghan forces.

Challenges the leaders agreed on included the need for more checkpoints in southern areas and the danger of improvised explosive devices still being used by the enemy.

Toolan, who participated in the conversations, gave credit to the Afghan forces making strides every day in taking over operations.

“It was a great discussion, but we’ve got some work to do, it will take commitment from leaders,” said Toolan.

The conference ended with Afghan leaders planning to improve coordination among their own forces. Their objective is to continue to provide security for the local population and develop a stable Afghanistan.
