News: USS The Sullivans trains with Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 for the day

NAPLES, Italy - On patrol in support of Operation Active Endeavor March 11, the three ships of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 took advantage of the presence of USS The Sullivans for a number of exercises that allowed operators to demonstrate and hone their skills.
In a short time frame, the four ships conducted a series of seamanship drills and a simulated air defense exercise before resuming respective patrols.
Commander Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 is always keen to bolster the group’s strength by training with other NATO-country ships in the Mediterranean on associated support to Operation Active Endeavour. Such training is of mutual benefit and helps perfection already high maritime interoperability standards.
SNMG1 is one of NATO’s immediate reaction forces, permanently deployed on readiness training for NRF missions or in real world NATO operations. At the moment, SNMG1 is deployed in Operation Active Endeavor, NATO’s Article 5 antiterrorism mission in the Mediterranean Sea. SNMG1 is led by Commodore Ben Bekkering and currently consists of the flagship HNLMS De Ruyter and the frigates HMCS Charlottetown and FGS Rheinland Pfalz.
