CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - 9th Communication Battalion Marines in the Motorcycle Safety Club rode as a pack to the Veteran’s Home of California at Chula Vista, March 2.
The club visited the veteran’s home as part of a new community outreach plan. They meet once a month to promote safe motorcycle riding skills, get to know other bikers and give back to the community.
“This month we are going to Chula Vista to give tribute to a veteran’s home and present them with a plaque,” said Lance Cpl. Devin Minnich, 23, a telephone systems and PC intermediate repairman with 9th Communication Battalion. “We do it to give back and to practice new roads that challenge our skills to keep us on our toes while we are riding.”
The safety club, also known as the 9th Communication Battalion Motorcycle Road Warriors, sends out a monthly invite for the ride. The commanding officer said that since the founding of their club, accident rates have gone down.
“They’re trying to get involved in the community, which is why they’re going to visit a veterans home on this months day ride,” said Lt. Col. Ahmed Williams, the commanding officer of 9th Communication Battalion. “Plus, it’s a beautiful day to ride and to learn some good skills.”
Safe riding is promoted in the Marine Corps. All riders must pass a motorcycle safety class before they’re allowed to ride a motorcycle.
“We had some motorcycle accidents happening in the unit before the Motorcycle Safety Club was set up,” Williams said. “I brag about this club to my boss every chance I get because since it started, we’ve only had one accident. We’ve had a significant improvement in motorcycle safety within our unit.”
