Afghan National Police graduates 147 non-commissioned officers

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The police regional training center in Kandahar graduated 147 Afghan Uniform Policemen from a non-commissioned officer and literacy course, Feb. 23.

Momin Khan Sarfraz, a 22-year-old Kunduz province native, was the distinguished class graduate.

“I knew I wanted to become a policeman,” said Sarfraz.“My father retired as a colonel in the Afghan National Police and he encouraged me to become a policeman as well.”

Sarfraz, like most recruits who join the police force, had little to no basic literacy skills, which is why the course started with six weeks of literacy training.

“I didn’t know I was so talented,” said Sarfraz. “But with the encouragement of my instructors and Brig. Gen. Nasrullah Zarifi, [regional training center commander], I was able to learn how to read and write in Pashto and even learn some English.”

“Sarfraz was an excellent performer during this course,” said 2nd Lt. Nasrullah Aria, one of Sarfraz’s instructors. “That is why he was recognized as the elite student. He was illiterate when he started. Now he can spell his name in English. He’s young and will learn much more. I’m sure he’ll do a good job.”

“I enjoyed being a basic policeman,” said Sarfraz. “But I’ve learned a lot to become an NCO. This course was a great experience and I look forward to doing good things.”

The AUP non-commissioned officer and literacy course was 14 weeks long. Some of the subjects taught during the course were police survival skills, radio usage, criminal intelligence information collection, advanced first aid, police leadership, building and vehicle search techniques, hazardous materials, immigration law, and police station defense.
