LAGHMAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Workout names do not generally raise eyebrows, but one Task Force Thunderbird Crossfit Trainer, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Kristin Sloan did just that during a recent fundraiser called ‘Burpees for Boobs.’

Sloan, a Task Force Thunderbird Crossfit trainers, coordinated the fundraiser Aug. 26, that consisted of cardio, strength and a lot of sweat to help raise funds for breast cancer detection.

Sloan of Mustang, Okla. is an Intelligence Officer with Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 700 Brigade Support Battalion, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Forward Operating Base Gamberi, Afghanistan. She found out the gym she joined in Oklahoma City is raising funds for breast cancer and decided to participate in the event.

“I saw my gym back home was doing this fundraiser to help women who can’t afford the testing for mammograms,” said Sloan. “I think it’s great that we can have an event here in Afghanistan and the money goes back to support Oklahoma women.”

Thirty-nine individuals from all ranks and from the Army and Air Force participated, making up the 19 teams and one individual who competed. Sloan had to break the teams into three different sets or heats to get everyone through the exercises held in the make-shift gym.

Avid fans of Crossfit recognized the Workout of the Day --“Helen meets Grace”. The workout included three rounds for time: “Helen” 400 meter run, 21 kettlebell swings, 12 pull-ups and “Grace” 30 clean and jerks. Sloan ended the event with 45 burpees, to represent the 45th IBCT.

“This event brought a lot of people together on this small FOB,” said U.S. Army Capt. Jeff Stevenson, logistics officer for Headquarters Headquarters Company, 700th BSB, 45th IBCT. “I was really glad to see so many come out and that Sloan was able to put something like this together.”

Because funds were donated on-line, the amount raised at this event could not be totaled.
