BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Residents celebrated the opening of a district community center for both men and women in Pul-E-Khumri district, Feb. 10.
The community center building was donated by a local resident and the center will provide a place for meetings, shuras, and educational seminars, free of charge.
The official opening was recognized by a meeting of local male villagers with coalition special operations forces on one end of the center, while female villagers met with a female service members on the other.
The men talked with the coalition SOF at length about development issues, such as a need for a medical clinic, the ability to drill deeper wells, and ways to improve their irrigation for their crops.
The women held discussions with the female service members about different programs to help educate and teach various skills to women in the area. Additionally, the female service members donated 300 literacy books and 30 radios to the community center to allow the women to participate in a radio literacy program.
“The amount of people that turned out today at the opening of this community center is a big indicator that they want to help their community,” said coalition SOF team member. “This will be a place where citizens of the area can repeatedly meet to educate themselves and make plans to improve their local area.”
