    4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – The command sergeant major for the 1st Infantry Division encouraged the division’s junior leaders to “get involved in the lives of their soldiers” during a visit with the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade team, Feb. 8-9.

“It’s up to you to ask the right questions, say the right things and get involved in the lives of our future leaders,” Command Sgt. Maj. Charles V. Sasser, Jr. said. “We owe it to them to tell them where they stand, what they are doing right and how they can improve.”

During his two day visit to the Dauntless Brigade, Sasser spoke with senior leaders, toured battalion work spaces and met with several soldiers including Cpl. Wiyaou Kamaziwe, a fire control system repair specialist assigned to B Company, 193rd Brigade Support Battalion.

Kamaziwe spoke with the division’s senior non-commissioned officer about his recent promotion to corporal and his additional responsibilities as the brigade armament section supervisor.

Sasser said that junior leaders, like Kamaziwe, shape the future of the Army by encouraging their subordinates to always strive to be the best soldier they can be.

Sasser also discussed the Army’s on-going reduction of forces with the 4th MEB’s troops, noting that Army leaders are working hard to ensure that the “best of the best” remain in the formation. He said that it is up to junior leaders to encourage their soldiers to be the very best by enforcing standards and leading by example.

“We can’t tell soldiers who to love or how to spend their money, but we can share our experiences,” he said. “It’s about taking care of soldiers.”

Sasser said he intends to visit every brigade within the 1st Inf. Div. before the division headquarters’ anticipated spring deployment.
