MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Nearly 20 administrators, teachers and service providers from across North Carolina participated in a “Boot Camp for Educators” seminar aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Feb. 3.

“This event is a co-sponsored event by Family Team Building and the School Liaison Program,” said Donna Bagley, school liaison with the Cherry Point Community Planning and Liaison office. She said it was the third time the organizations hosted the event.

The purpose of the event was to expose educators to military culture and help them understand the needs that are unique to military children, said Bagley.

“We want to link them to the base so that they can establish good connections. That way they feel comfortable referring families to us so they can take advantage of the services we have here,” she said. “It’s all about building relationships.”

The day’s activities included a series of workshops, group discussions and a tour of the air station. Participants received lifestyles-insights-networking-knowledge-skills (L.I.N.K.S.) training, deployment support preparation and an overview of legislations that affect military children.

“By increasing the educators’ knowledge of the Marine Corps, our activities and our ethos, educators can better meet the academic, social and emotional needs of our military children,” said Carol Davis, a member of the Officers’ Spouses Club and wife of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Commanding General Maj. Gen. Jon M. Davis.
Bagley said she feels the event is critical because of the role MCAS Cherry Point plays in the community and how important it is for everyone to understand each other’s unique perspective.

“The installation benefits because we get an idea of what it is that schools need,” she said. “The kids are the ones that ultimately benefit from this the most because teachers really understand that transitioning can be extremely difficult for some kids.”

This is the third year the event has been hosted aboard MCAS Cherry Point, and attendance was at its peak. It is critical that air station organizations get as many educators as possible to attend future boot camps, said Davis.

“I would like to thank the educators for taking the time to better understand the life of a military child,” said Davis. “I participated because I wanted to show my support for the program. Educators are strategic partners in our military community.”
