BAN CHAN KREM, Thailand - Marines and sailors from the air combat element of 3rd Marine Brigade work with Combat Assault Battalion conducting casualty evacuation drills, in a realistic environment, as part of Exercise Cobra Gold here, Feb. 7.

Exercise Cobra Gold is a recurring multinational and multiservice exercise which takes place in the Kingdom of Thailand designed to advance regional security and interoperability through joint training where nations can ensure common goals are met through a coordinated effort.

“The training is designed to provide expedient transportation for medical treatment that is otherwise unavailable at the casualty’s current level of care,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Aaron A. Alvarez, a casualty evacuation corpsman with 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.

During the training exercise, a simulated casualty is transported from the training area, stabilized by the shock trauma platoon attached to Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and transported by a safety vehicle to the landing zone for extraction to a higher echelon of care, said Chief Jodi L. Wright, group medical chief with 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.

The focus of the training was to improve coordination between the all elements of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. With the combat lifesaver training provided by sailors attached to Combat Assault Battalion, Marines are able to act swiftly, allowing the corpsman to take appropriate action.

Once at the landing zone, the casualty is then transported to the Thai Mai airfield of the Royal Thai Navy, and then transported by a Thai ambulance to the Bangkok Chanturby Hospital.

“This particular exercise is designed to foster a positive working relationship between forces on the ground and local medical personnel,” said Alvarez. “It helps us to coordinate with local hospitals so we can work well with each other in case there is a casualty.”
