MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Transitioning service members, military spouses and Department of Defense civilians attended a resume workshop at the Marine & Family Services building here, Feb. 6.
The purpose of the workshop, which open to service members, their families, government civilians and retirees, is to offer information and tips on writing a quality resume, said Rob Dunagan, a transition employment specialist with Marine & Family Programs and the resume workshop instructor.
“I’ve taught this class for more than five years, and it’s always important and relevant for the participants,” said Dunagan. “There are always a lot of questions about resumes- how long they should be, what they should say, how they should look- but they’re simply a self-portrait of yourself in words.”
The workshop covered multiple topics, including the purpose of a resume, resume characteristics, types and elements, common mistakes and helpful tips.
Information shared during the two hour classes ranged from well-known, such as the elements of a chronological resume, to less known facts, such as calling potential employers in advance to inquire about an opening’s most important qualifications.
The workshop proved to be beneficial for many of the class participants.
“I was very impressed with the all the information the class provided in such a timely manner,” said 1st Sgt. Stacie Black, company first sergeant for Bravo Company, Headquarters & Support Battalion. “I learned some valuable tips and tricks and definitely feel more prepared to talk to my Marines and answer their questions about the resume process.”
The workshop serves as a vital tool for those looking to re-enter the job market, especially after transitioning from the military life, said Dunagan.
“The private sector operates differently from the military way of doing things, and transitioning service members must have the skills and know-how to adapt and get themselves noticed,” said Dunagan. “Having knowledge about job searching, writing a resume and conducting an interview are key elements that will lead to success.”
